Long Live the Queen

Such a sad day here in Wilmington... My long-time best friend and companion Wenzi died suddenly last night from bloat, also know as gastric dilatation-volvulus. Had I realized what was happening at the time and gotten her to the emergency room, it's possible it could have been a different outcome, but such is life...

She would have been 11 in February 2008 and was the Queen of All She Surveyed. The hardest thing for us right now is that we had no time to prepare. At 10+ years, you know the clock is ticking, but I thought she'd give me a hint when the time was getting nearer. Other than the normal parts starting to wear out or slow down, she was full of life.

Just yesterday we visited two nursing homes where we do therapy work and she was her usual ridgeback self: "sure I'll shake your hand/kiss your face, assuming you have a treat in the other!" In fact, we met some new friends there who were just blown away by how young she looked for an old girl...

Like the wonderful stoic grand-dame that she will always be in our hearts and minds, she quietly crept off in the night to my office to lay her head down one last time in the room where she helped me whelp her grandpups this past March, next to the old couch where she presided while I worked for hours at a time on the computer.

Goodbye old friend...I miss you more than I ever would have believed and am glad you were able to go on your timetable rather than eventually leaving it up to the wuss that would be me. I'm heartbroken we didn't have the chance to say goodby before you left.

Wenzi will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her. She and good ol' Simon are the reasons we wanted a Ridgeback of our own. I have never met another dog like Wenzi and dare I say I never will again. She was one of a kind and so, so special. Take care sweet girl!

My silent and forever non-judgemental friend. Always glad to see me and the first to greet me in a dignified manner befitting her status as Queen. I'll miss you and all your affectations. We enjoyed many an hour of TV and sleep. Our girl would always find any BOO BOO you had and apply her own medicine to it. I will always remember the genuine affection with which she greeted her pups and grandpups.

Bob and I lit a candle for Wenzi as soon as Mary called. She was easily the most gentle and loving RR we have ever met. When Mary escribes here as regal she isn't kidding. When we stayed at Hope Ridge with our 4 rrs Wenzi and Jasmine became fast freinds often looking at each other with that secret doggie smile that seemed to say, these little poop trackers are too funny. We enjoyed sitting on the back porch a beer in hand, everyone bs'ing , pups and adolescents running about... but Wenz and Jazz always close to us keeping an eye on everything and everyone. We loved seeing her when we all went to the RR Rodeo and hung out at the Scattergun Reserve, watching over Pearlie's pups and hanging out with Gerry at the RV. At the Salem show, it was miserably hot and so very crowded... Thank God we had a chance to give her a good bye kiss, We will miss you sweetheart, you are one never to be forgotten.

Mary and Gerry, I am so sorry to hear this sad news...but I shan't forget the strong impression Wenzi made on me when we were all together in New York. Oh, these are hard adjustments...but can't help smiling when I think of her and the pleasure she brought to you. Lots of Hugs, Dear Ones...Aunt Ellie in Oklahoma <>< jordanellie@sbcglobal.net

We are all so saddened hearing the news. I had to wait a day to tell Liv because Friday she landed a lead in the junior high play and she had proclaimed the day as "the best day of her life". I couldn't bear to pull the cloud out from under her... Wenzi was so special that she actually made ME think that I wouldn't mind having a dog. But I know that finding one like her is one in a million and I don't know if I'm willing to take those odds! Our thoughts are with you and Gerry...
